“Self-Controlled. Sober-Minded”
Blessings folk!
The end of all things is near.
That is what Peter said!
What are Believers to do?
1 Pe 4:7
The end of all things is at hand;
therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
ESV
Not exactly what one might think.
With a “end of all things” mind set…especially of the world…one might be thinking “prepare, hide, etc.”
That is not what we are to do.
We are to be self-controlled.
Freaketh thou not!
We are not to be controlled and overwhelmed by fear and anxiety.
We are to be sober-minded.
This is not speaking exclusively of drunkenness.
It means to be serious.
Not sour.
Not dour.
Not a joyless religionist.
Rather, we are to be serious of mind, of intent.
Self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of our prayers.
For the sake of prayer!?
Think on that.
Does our lack of control hinder our prayer?
Yes.
Our fear.
Our doubts.
Our lack of faith.
Do the frivolous things of life hinder our prayer?
Yes.
Amusement. “A”=“not”. “Muse”= “think, reflect, meditate”.
Amusement=think not…distraction.
The pursuit of the things of the world.
So, what should we be doing.
Living self-controlled, sober-minded lives of prayer…to the praise of the glory of His grace.
