Corruption

“Corruption”
Blessings folk!
Paul continued to exhort and encourage the people about Jesus.
Paul had given a quick historical account of the people of the Lord.
He brought them to king David.
Then, the offspring of king David, Jesus.
Act 13:34-42
And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead,
no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,
“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’
Therefore he says also in another psalm,
“‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’
For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation,
fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption,
but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.
Let it be known to you therefore, brothers,
that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:
“‘Look, you scoffers,
be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’”
As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.
ESV
The message was direct.
Jesus is raised from the dead.
His Body did not undergo corruption.
Jesus is the holy and sure blessing of David.
David’s body did undergo corruption…decay.
After he served the purpose of God “in his own generation”.
God also has a greater purpose for David, part of which is that Messiah would come from him.
Paul then forthrightly proclaims to all listening that “through this man forgiveness is proclaimed to you”.
Through Jesus.
Forgiveness is in Jesus.
All who believe in Jesus are freed from everything.
Everything?
Yes, especially everything that one could not be freed by the law of Moses.
Paul closes with a word of warning.
He told the listeners to “beware.”
The Prophets (note the plural) had warned…
- Look!
- You scoffers…despisers
It was a warning to those who saw and heard…who were astounded, yet did not believe.
They would perish.
God was doing a work in their days…and in ours.
A work no on will believe…even if told.
The response.
They went out and the people begged to learn more.
The authorized version gives more insight…
Act 13:42
And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue,
the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
KJV
The Jews…often referring to leadership…went out.
The Gentiles…God-fearers…wanted to hear more.
We will see more…
