“Baptism”
Blessings folk!
We press on.
Read the previous passage again to remind of context for the next verses…
1 Pe 3:18-20
For Christ also suffered once for sins,
the righteous for the unrighteous,
that he might bring us to God,
being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,
because they formerly did not obey,
when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah,
while the ark was being prepared,
in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.
ESV
The eight were brought safely through the water.
They believed.
The Water of the Judgment of God came upon disobedient mankind.
They did not believe.
Now, the next sentence/two verses…
1 Pe 3:21-22
Baptism,
which corresponds to this,
now saves you,
not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience,
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God,
with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
ESV
What?
Baptism?
Where did that come from?
:)
These are great truths.
Look at them.
Peter is saying that baptism corresponds to being brought safely through the flood.
How?
By faith!
By belief!
It is not “baptism” as an act that saves…the removal of dirt from the body.
It is the appeal to God for a good conscience.
It is faith and belief in God.
It is an appeal…a crying out in repentance.
It is an appeal through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is believing what God has done through Jesus!
…to be continued…
