Answer not a fool according to his folly,

On the surface the statement seems clear.
Do not become a fool in answering a fool.
But…the next Proverb…
Pro 26:5
Answer a fool according to his folly,
lest he be wise in his own eyes.
ESV
Answer not.
Answer.
Huh?
LOL
We are to answer/respond to a fool.
We are to correct.
We are to speak the truth.
We are not to become as a fool when we do so.
We are not to become wise in our own eyes.
Read the NLT…
Pro 26:4-5
Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools,
or you will become as foolish as they are.
Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools,
or they will become wise in their own estimation.

Do not respond to a fool foolishly…with foolish arguments.
Do respond to a fool lest they think they are wise…correct.
Be not a fool.
Speak truth.
